WEEE Regulations
Overview
The Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Directive is UK law. It requires producers to pay for collection, treatment, and recovery of waste electrical equipment. Suppliers must allow free returns of waste equipment. Lightsource is registered as a producer under registration number WEE/MM5845AA.
Environmental Impact
The amount of WEEE we throw away is increasing by around 5% each year, making it the fastest growing waste stream in the UK. Much waste ends up in landfill, where lead and toxins cause soil and water contamination, harming habitats, wildlife, and human health.
Recycling Benefits
Many discarded electrical items can be repaired or recycled, conserving finite resources and reducing environmental and health risks from landfill disposal.
Producer Obligations
Distributors, producers, and retailers must provide systems allowing customers to recycle old equipment. Lightsource is obliged under these regulations to offer our customers free take-back of their WEEE on a like-for-like basis when they buy a new Electrical or Electronic product.
Consumer Guidance
Products covered have a crossed-out wheelie bin symbol. Consumers should not discard marked items in household waste or attempt self-repair, as this requires qualified electricians.
